Tourist Info

Stranraer is located in the southwest of Scotland and lies on the shores of Loch Ryan. The town is a major port with regular sailings to Northern Ireland. The port has played a key role in the fortunes of Stranraer since the mid-1700s. The town is seen as the gateway to the Rhins of Galloway, which stretches from the Mull of Galloway to Milleur Point and Corsewall Point. Portpatrick and Cairnryan are also major towns in the region.

A major attraction in Stranraer is the 16th century Castle of St John, which affords excellent views across the town. The seafront, at the head of Loch Ryan, is also enticing and visitors can watch the fishing boats and ferries setting sail across the loch. Also on the seafront is Agnew Park with its recreational facilities for all the family. For those who want to relax in beautiful gardens then Stair Park is the place to visit.

The town is the home of Scottish Football League side Stranraer FC and for those who prefer rugby there is Wigtownshire RFC whose base is opposite Stair Park. Scotland is famed for its golf and there are several golf clubs in the area, including the Stranraer, Lagganmore and Wigtownshire golf courses. The region is also popular with birdwatchers, cyclists, fishermen and horse riders.

The ferry service and ancillary industries make a sizeable contribution to Stranraer's economy. The town also boasts a small fishing fleet while farming also provides employment in the area. Tourism is also a source of jobs and income.
