Coal mining and engineering being the other main stays of the towns recent heritage notably brought to the attention of the masses through the late Fred Dibnah.
Nearby in the outer town of Horwich is the Macron stadium home to Bolton Wanderers FC, this newly built ground (1990s) features Whites Hotel built into it with some rooms having views pitch-side which is a real hoot if you're a fan.
