About Maidstone

Maidstone is located in Kent on the banks of the River Medway. London is only 32 miles away and the town is linked to Rochester and the Thames Estuary via the Medway. The town is famous for its shopping centres and is well linked to larger cities and towns such as London, via rail links, major roads and bus routes.

Maidstone is home to over one million square feet of retail floor space, which is primarily located in two large shopping centres that attract millions of visitors every year. The Mall Maidstone and Fremlin Walk, have recently been joined by other entertainment options including the Lockmeadow Centre, where nightclubs, bars, a cinema and the main town market square can all be found.

Maidstone United Football Club play their home games at the newly built Gallagher Stadium, and they have played in the town since 1897. The local Maidstone Hockey Club lays claim to being the oldest field hockey club in the UK after being founded in 1878, while the Maidstone Rugby Football Club is also one of the oldest in the UK.

The river was once a primary source of the town's trade and Maidstone was traditionally known as the centre of agriculture in Kent, which is often referred to as the Garden of England. The local economy has changed a lot in recent years, from being involved in heavy industry to now being mostly reliant on service industries. The largest paper recycling factory in Europe is located in Maidstone and lots of technology firms can be found on the outskirts.
