Hereford Info

Situated on the River Wye, Hereford is located just a few miles from the Welsh border, with the counties of Worcester and Gloucester as neighbours. It has a rich history filled with ancient battles, defeats and triumphs.

The Cider Museum and King Offa Distillery, a mere 10 minute walk from the town centre, is worthy of a family visit. A calendar of events runs throughout the year, including cider making festivals, Morris dancing and other activities related to the heritage of this industry.

Hereford Cathedral, a site of worship for over 1,200 years, is home to the unique Mappa Mundi. This medieval map is a national treasure and contains detailed historical drawings. The cathedral is redolent with Normandy architecture and together with the 21st century New Library building, it provides a place for quiet reflection.

For light-hearted entertainment, the Courtyard provides exhibition space for artists and is a delightful venue for comedy acts and orchestral groups.

Sporting facilities and clubs include the Lady Hawkins Community Leisure Centre, Hereford Whitecross premier rackets, Herefords Mavericks Basketball and Hereford Rowing Club. The latter offers water sports enthusiasts a straight mile of racing water and six miles of training water on the beautiful River Wye.

Herefordshire's rich soil and amenable climate support the production of a variety of produce, such as beef, cider and beer. Major investment projects have come to fruition in the form of the Hereford County Hospital and Herefordshire College of Technology. An exciting, long-term regeneration project for the canal basin area is now underway and promises to bring many more retail and leisure facilities to the area.
