The cities Cathedral is the longest medieval cathedral in Europe and contains an exhibition of medieval carvings and paintings, along with the illuminated Winchester Bible. The majestic Great Hall, which was part of Winchester Castle, with its splendid stained glass windows, is another popular attraction. The City Museum details the history from prehistoric times, through the Roman and mediaeval eras and on to modern times. The Military Museums, for their part, tell the colourful tale of the city's regimental history.
Avid shoppers will be pleased to find a wide selection of boutiques located in the Square and on Parchment Street. A selection of independent shops is also to be found on High Street, along with colourful markets, such as the Kings Walk Antique Market. Tourism is the economic mainstay of Winchester and together with other cities, such as Portsmouth and Southampton, accounts for the bulk of the tourism revenue flowing into Hampshire. The retail industry also plays an important part in the local economy.
