History of The Hope Anchor Hotel
A Nasty Motley Crew! Pistols at the ready and regular fights for territory with other local smugglers gangs including the infamous hawkhurst, legend has it that on one occassion the tenterdon gang famously out gunned the hawkhurst gang and they scurried hurriedly back to their watering hole!
Most of the secret passage ways and escape routes are now blocked in. But once here it doesn't take alot of imagination to realise what it was like in those dark and exciting days! The Hope Anchor as it's name suggest's was built primarily for a watering hole for the sailors, ship builders as Rye was still surronded by the sea up until the late 18th century.
Although famous for it's past, the Hope Anchor is known locally for it's stunning views accross the quayside, Romney Marshes, Camber castel and beyond to the sea. Most of our rooms enjoy these panoramic views.
The Hope Anchor features in Malcom Saville Childrens books and is described as the Gay Dolphin. It has also been identified as the traders arms in the Mapp and Lucia books by E.F.Benson, a well known writer who lived in Lamb House.
Rye was never built to cope with today's traffic or transport and parking is at a premium in Rye. We however are lucky, although the outside of the Hope Anchor is controlled by the local authorities, we have parking permits for our gusts so your car is never far away.Rye is located about one mile from the coast, 12 miles east of Hastings, near the rivers Rother, Tillingham and Brede. It is located at the junction of the A259/A268. The A21/A268 provides access from London and the M25 (from Gatwick or Heathrow Airports). The M20/A2070/A259 provides access from Dover, the Channel Tunnel (Cheriton Terminal) and the M25 from the Dartford Crossing and the A20 alternative route from London. From the A268 circumnavigate Rye clockwise via the A259 (Hasting Road); as you notice yachts on your left, turn right into Wishward; drive up Mermaid Street (passing Mermaid Passage, the foot link to Mermaid Street and the town from The Hope Anchor), turn right into West Street (Lamb House is on the corner), and then right again into Watch Bell Street. The Hope Anchor is at the end of the cobbled street. Alternatively, via The Landgate Arch, drive up the hill, take your first left into East Street, first left again into Church Square, first right into Watch bell Street. By Rail: From London (Charing Cross), Dover, Paris or Brussels you can change at Ashford International and connect with the little train to Rye.
