Description:
Shieldhall is set in the heart of the Northumbrian Borders and nestles into rolling landscape overlooking the National Trust’s estate of Wallington. It has been charmingly restored from the original I7th century house, cottages and later farm buildings by the present owners. Once home to the family of Capability Brown and part of the Kirkharle Estate, Shieldhall is now perfectly suited to its role as family run, country guest house.

Guests stay in the recently converted rooms which open into the pretty courtyard with its ancient well and patios. Each suite is named after the wood used for the furniture and fittings within. Stephen and his family make and restore bespoke and antique furniture and there are many examples of their artistry within. You have the use of a beautiful library within the courtyard and a fully licensed residential bar.

Dinners at Shieldhall are sociable occasions. A single well balanced menu of four courses is provided from fresh seasonal and local produce and for this reason dinners must be ordered in advance. Celia is a friendly and attentive hostess who loves cooking and given sufficient notice your own dietary requirements can be especially catered for.

Northumberland is steeped in history with many neolithic settlements, Roman fortifications, mediaeval castles and neoclassical houses. Within easy distance of Shieldhall you will find Hadrian’s Wall, Alnwick Castle, Cragside House, Wallington Hall, Newcastle and Durham. The roads are traffic free by southern standards and you will more likely be stopped by sheep than traffic lights. This area is a paradise for natural and human history and there is so much to see and do that one visit is rarely enough.

Shieldhall offers excellent accommodation in comfortable surroundings of outstanding natural beauty. We want you to experience it and look forward to welcoming you to our home.
