Jedburgh on the A68, is a typical Borders town, with a history of tweed making. The local weavers were the first to combine two colours in their weave, thus inventing tweed. Even the Tourist Information Centre and car park are on the site of a former mill. The original woollen developments were centred round the activities of the monks in the Border Abbeys, of which Jedburgh's is the best preserved.
Jedburgh boasts two woollen mill shops with restaurants, two supermarkets, numerous gift shops, many eating houses and coffee shops, hotels and pubs serving good food and ale, an all night filling station, a caravan and camping site, a golf course, a swimming pool, a rugby team, a football team, a festival held every July, the ever popular Street Party also held in July, where live bands play on the back of a lorry in a car park. The Abbey of course, Mary, Queen of Scots' House, with a museum, and Jedburgh Castle Jail, also worth a mention are the two factories of Mainetti and LS Starrett, which serves as employment for a great many people in the town.
