Description:
Howard Creek Ranch, a registered historic site, is a 60-acre oceanfront farm bordered by miles of beach and mountains, located just south of the 60-mile long "Lost Coast", the Sinkyone Wilderness.
The ranch offers farm animals, flower gardens, fireplaces/woodstoves, a 75-foot long swinging footbridge over Howard Creek, hot tubs and hiking trails. Accommodations include cabins, suites and rooms all uniquely furnished with antiques, large comfortable beds, private baths, handmade quilts, and with views of the mountains, ocean, or creek. Some accommodate pets by prior arrangement only. Most are designed for two persons. Visit the home page at www.howardcreekranch.com for pictures (elk, flowers, tide pools, lots of animals, sunsets, etc), directions and detailed descriptions of each room. Most have kitchenettes, some have VCRs with TV screens. We provide wireless internet access. A phone is available for your use and a full ranch breakfast is included in the rate. All reservations are made over the telephone and not by email.
We are a farm stay and as such differ from your ordinary hotel experience.
We are located on the beach (well, not on the sand, that would be dangerous) , about 2.5 hours south of Eureka, or 180 miles north of San Francisco on Highway 1, a spectacular scenic drive. Our website has a full page devoted to things to do in the area including visiting redwoods (some onsite via trails); going horseback riding on the beach or in the mountains (both novices and skilled riders accommodated); taking a ride on the famous Skunk Train, viewing whales from the bluffs or going deep sea fishing from Noyo Harbour; enjoying a German deep massage (gentleness is always appropriate); tasting wine at our local coastal winery, the Pacific Star Winery, just south of Westport and served in the White House in the nineties, or stop in Anderson Valley on your way here or on your way home to visit many famous boutique wineries. We have a multitude of brochures to help you plan your day. For those who want to simply relax, spend a day lying on the sand on our beach.
We have some of the finest dining anywhere in the world on the Mendocino Coast. Menus are available at the ranch so that you may make your reservations in comfort. We also have two new local restaurants opening in the summer of 2008, The DeHaven Valley Farm and the yet to be named new restaurant and bar in Westport, three miles south of us. Last but not least there are numerous shops, galleries, and plant nurseries on the Mendocino Coast.
If you like to hike this is the place for you. We have onsite trails and are almost surrounded by wilderness areas with miles and miles of trails.
When you visit our home page, www.HowardCreekRanch.com please look at the History Section. We were built in 1871 and have done all of the restoration ourselves, milling the redwood lumber onsite in addition to dismantling unwanted (unfortunately) buildings and reusing the materials from the past. We are not yet finished. It seems to be a never-ending project. We don't make noise when it would disturb you, so that limits my husband greatly, but it does make for a peaceful stay for you. So do not be surprised to see a barn undergoing reconstruction.
Last, but not least, we are three miles north of Westport, a sleepy, friendly little village, with a deli/grocery store/gas station/post office all in one and a local crafts and artist's gallery . The building styles are mostly from the late 1880s and fashioned after those on the coast of Maine, where many early settlers originated. The village headland bluffs offer a small cove beach, which is accessed via a long, sturdy wooden stairway. On Mother's Day we have an annual Rubber Ducky Race funding local organizations. Bring your rubber ducky and race it on Wages Creek to win glory and prizes.
Please visit our web page at www.HowardCreekRanch.com for more information and call us at 707-964-6725 for all reservations.
