Description:
The Hotel Portmeirion was first opened in 1926 by Clough Williams-Ellis (1883 - 1978). He set out to show that even a beautiful place could be developed without spoiling it. The hotel enjoyed a celebrated clientele from the start. Writers such as George Bernard Shaw, H.G.
Wells and Brtrand Russell were habitués; Noel Coward wrote Blithe Spirit here during two weeks in 1941. Architects were also drawn here: Frank Llyod Wright came in 1956, to see what was going on. In 1966 Patrick McGoohan persuaded Clough to allow him to film The Prisoner here which has since become a television classic.
Portmeirion's accommodation consists of 14 rooms in the main hotel building, 26 rooms and suites in the cottages that make up the village and 11 rooms and suites in Castell Deudraeth. All rooms in the hotel and village have en suite bathrooms, television and telephones.
The rooms at Castell Deudraeth have wide screen TV's, with DVD, marble tiled bathrooms with whirlpool baths, real flame gas fires, kitchenettes and lift access. There are several conference rooms and civil wedding venues at Portmeirion: Hercules Hall, the Tudor Room close by and the Ricardo Room at Castell Deudraeth.
