Description:
This charming former rectory is set in eight tranquil acres of lawns, garden, woodland, pond and paddocks. From its 750’ high vantage point on the western edge of Exmoor, there are long views across rural North Devon to Bideford Bay and Hartland Point 27 miles away. Eight ensuite bedrooms, including two on the ground floor, are all equipped with ensuite bathrooms, colour televisions, hair dryers and hot drink facilities. They also provide guests with all the peace and comfort necessary for complete relaxation. The drawing room includes a small bar whilst the library has a wide range of books and a lot of local information. The country-style Aga-based cooking, with a small but interesting and different choice each day, is prepared with great care. We use North Devon produce, meat from local farms, fresh fish from Ilfracombe and vegetables from local
growers. Wines are modestly priced. Service is attentive and courteous with attention to individual requirements. Special diets catered for by prior arrangement.

The hotel, built as a rectory in 1840, has been converted without losing the general ambience of a country house. The drawing room has a small well-stocked bar whilst the library has a wide range of books and leaflets about the area as well as natural history, biographies and fiction. Although the hotel has full central heating, fires are always ready to be lit in both rooms. The hotel is completely non smoking.

The Wodehouse Connection: The Rector of Bratton Fleming between 1875 and 1913 was the Reverend Philip John Wodehouse MA (Cantab), he was one of 15 uncles and 20 aunts of P. G. Wodehouse who holidayed in Devon between 1886 and 1895. The 30 or so clergymen in Wodehouse novels were probably partly based on Wodehouse’s four clerical uncles.

Bracken House is a convenient base for all the attractions of North Devon and the rugged beauty and spectacular coastline of Exmoor. Nearby are National Trust properties such as Arlington Court and large stretches of NT-owned coastline. Gardens include Rosemoor (RHS), Marwood Hill and Docton Mill. Visitors are also attracted to Doone Country, Dunster, and the pannier
markets of South Molton, Barnstaple, Bideford and Torrington. The coastline varies between high cliffs interspersed with rocky coves and sandy beaches.
