The Border Hotel is at the end of the Pennine Way. Here the tradition states that if you have walked the full 268 miles (429km) from Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm in Scotland and present a copy of Wainwrights guide at the bar you can claim a free drink. The pint was originally paid for by Wainwright him self but he reduced his offer of a free pint to a free half in 1979 as a result of low donations to charity from walkers. After his death in 1991 he left money in his will to carry on the tradition but this has long run out and is now sponsored by the Broughton Ales a brewery in Peebles, they brew the Pennine Way Bitter exclusively for the Border Hotel which is an excellent hoppy bitter .
