History of the Argyll Arms
The Argyll Arms has been a presence in Bunessan Village for 3 centuries; The Argyll Arms records show that in 1780 the rent of a public house was 1 Guinea per annum. We do know that the owner of the Inn was Lachlan 'Ban' McLean ( 1751-1819) and was considered to be a excellent host and accompanied Johnson & Boswell when they visited the island on their way to Iona to provide clean bedding and meals. It appears that in the 19th century the Argyll Arms was a small inn comprising of a hut with one spare room and two indifferent beds within according to the reports of one disgruntled traveller.
