Judges Lodging, York

The Judges Lodgings Hotel is a charming Grade 1 listed Georgian Town House, set back from the hustle and bustle of central streets, within the shadow of York Minster and just a short walk from all the major shops & sights.

The building itself is impressive, and has a rich history, being built around 1710 by an eminent York Physician, Dr Winteringham whose son became surgeon to H.M. King George III. In 1806, it became the official residence of the Assize Court Judges and remained so until the 1970s when it was converted into the small & friendly hotel it is today, whilst retaining a wealth of original features, such as our glorious circular Georgian oak staircase (the only one of its type in the United Kingdom).

Being, as some say, one of the quirkiest hotels in Britain, we invite you to enjoy this magnificent building and our own special brand of hospitality, good humour and relaxed times. You will notice that our historic building exudes a certain faded grandeur and charm, enjoyed by many for centuries: high ceilings, large sash windows, antiques, paintings, open fireplaces and period furniture.

Many rooms have four poster beds, all are ensuite and some have spa baths. Our 18th century wine cellars (Judges Cellar Bar) provide a comfortable setting for lunch or pre-dinner drinks, as does Judges Cafe Bar on the reception floor.

We have 14 rooms, each special and unique: some have four-poster beds, some have spa baths & all have ensuite bathrooms. Many afford fabulous views of York Minster– magnificent by day and floodlit by night. All rooms have television and tea & coffee making facilities.

Breakfast is available on the reception floor in Judges Cafe Bar, where you can also enjoy refreshments throughout the day. Delicious home-cooked food is available from 12 noon to nine o'clock in the evening. You may also choose to visit Judges Cellar Bar, where you can enjoy the same delicious food in an informal setting inside or outside in fine weather.
