Foxghyll Guest House
Foxghyll Guest House, located 5 mins from Ambleside, on the historic literary road of Under Loughrigg. Originally built in the 1600’s in the style of a typical old Lakeland farmhouse, Foxghyll has undergone a diverse and colourful history. Having once had the famous writer, author and literary figure Thomas De Quincy as a tenant for a short time.

The house was later occupied by the Hon. WE. Forster. MP for the borough of Bradford, and the first minister of education. It was during this time in the 1870’s that extensive additions were added in the decorative & imaginative style of an affluent Regency country house.
For the last two decades however, Foxghyll has become established as one of the leading family run B & B’s in the area.

Offering guests a peaceful and tranquil setting, yet all within easy access to Ambleside and all the amenities the village has to offer.
In a fifteen-minute walk, or a five minute drive from Ambleside town centre, you will find Foxghyll. By the banks of the River Rothay. Set amongst a formally laid, 2-acre garden and with direct access onto Loughrigg Fell itself. Foxghyll sits as a haven to all those who seek to enjoy the beauty and serenity that the Lake District has to offer.

During the Spring and Summer months, Foxghyll’s private and secluded garden comes to life with a vast and varied array of plant and shrub life. The small stream that runs through the grounds, provides tranquillity and composure to the residence. With excellent views of the Lakeland fells, guests can gain easy access to Loughrigg and the Fells and valleys beyond, from the garden itself. From land adjoining the River Rothay, Foxghyll can also boast private fishing.
Foxghyll’s driveway also offers easy & accessible private parking.

As a grade 2 listed building, Foxghyll’s internal architecture has remained virtually unaltered inside since it’s 1870 renovation. All guests’ rooms are to be found in their original size and design, with the original dressing rooms providing convenient en-suite bathrooms. Therefore, Foxghyll can offer guests the choice of three large, spacious and luxurious rooms. Each with their own individual features and characteristics. All rooms offer comprehensive en-suite bathroom facilities, as well as essentials like tea / coffee making facilities, remote colour TV, clock radio, hairdryer etc. All rooms provide adequate, comfortable seating; with either settee or armchair.

The Front Room sits at the front of the house, overlooking the garden and the River Rothay. This room contains both a double and single bed, with bathroom en-suite. This room can be used as either a double or twin-bedded room. At the side of the house, overlooking the garden, and with spectacular views of Wansfell Pike (clouds forgiving) is the 4-Poster Room. This spacious room features a cosy four poster bed, with bathroom en-suite. The Spa Room offers guests the chance to relax in its large en-suite bathroom, with bubbly spa bath (excellent for easing those aches after a long day on the fells). This room has both a double and single bed, and as with the Front room, can be used as either a double or twin.

To set you up for the day, cereals, fruit and a substantial & traditional full English breakfast is served in the adjoining polished oak floored dining room. A vegetarian breakfast is available on request.

Guests can also relax in the bright, South facing private lounge, which offers direct access onto the garden.

Foxghyll is open all year, and you can be assured of a warm welcome by resident proprietor Marjorie Mann.

The setting must be one of the most beautiful in the Ambleside area. The spring flowers and trees could not have been more beautiful--so large and rich, intense and vibrant. The view from the large sweeping gardens over the river and fells beyond is breath-taking. The road to Foxghyll is the most peaceful in the area--closed to all but local traffic thus making it a lovely path upon which to walk to town. Some more variety at breakfast, a non-smoking environment, and an option to bathe or shower would make this an irresistible top-notch guest house. The welcome and hospitality we received was friendly and caring. The price was most competitive!
