Barn House is a friendly, family-run Bed & Breakfast situated just outside Orton, a beautiful lakeland village and an ideal launching point for your holiday in the scenic North of England.

Here at Barn House, we aim to make your stay as enjoyable as possible whilst not getting in the way of whatever plans you have. With some advance notice, we are happy to help you make arrangements for your holiday and can give you the kind of advice about the area that only local residents can give, untainted by any self-interest.

Orton is one of the most convenient and attractive villages in Cumbria for your North country holiday. Two miles from J38 on hte M6 yet in the peace of spectacular limestone country. An ideal centre for visits to the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, the North Pennines, the Border country and Morecambe Bay. Almost equal distance to Kendal, Penrith and Kirkby Stephen.

This is a land of limestone pavements, unique features formed by glaciers smoothing off the bedrock. The 'grikes' or gaps in the rocks provide habitats for rare plants and animals. The pavements, a feature of Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales, are a fragile part of our countryside and are now protected by law against damage or removal.

We are situated at the south end of Orton village, over the small hump-back bridge on the Raisbeck Road, on the north side of Orton Hall, map ref: NY 626079.

Motorists leave the North bound M6 at Tebay J38 and take the B6260 towards Appleby and on the South bound leave at Shap, J39 and follow Kendal signs for 1/4 mile, and then B6261 for Orton.

The nearest rail links are Penrith and Oxenholme (Kendal) on the West Coast Mainline and Kirkby Stephen on the Settle - Carlisle line. There are bus connections to Orton, but not very frequent and best checked before hand. If there are difficulties it may be possible for us to collect guests.
