Nearby Attractions:
Pickering,a gateway to the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, is a bustling market town with something for everyone. There is an excellent range of independent shops, a flea market and antique centre.Monday is market day and there is a Farmer's Market once a month.
Pickering is the home of the North Yorkshire Moors Steam railway running to Goathland(home of Heartbeat) and Whitby.
Beck Isle Museum is an amazing showcase of rural life, the parish church has outstanding medieval wall paintings,Pickering Castle is one of the best examples of a motte and bailey in the country and we have an Eric Gill font and a Whistler.JW Turner painted in Pickering and the father of english watercolour, Francis Nicholson, was a local.
Pickering is an ideal base for your North Yorkshire visit with Whitby,Scarborough and York all about 30 minutes drive.
Even closer are Castle Howard(Brideshead Revisited), Flamingoland(for white knuckle enthusiasts),Eden Camp(a WW2 museum), Ryedale Folk Museum, Rievaulx Abbey, Nunnington Hall, Helmsley Castle and the walled garden at Scampston.
There are amazing walks on the Moors and Coast and Dalby Forest is the place for more extreme activity with the best Mountain Bike trails in the country and Go Ape(for the swingers ).
Pickering hosts a number of high profile weekends-the 40s in October,a 60's festival in June, Traction Engine rally, World Moutain Bike Championsips in May, Christmas Lights Switch on in November,Walking Festival in April. Jazz and Arts festivals, a lively local music scene and good local theatre in Helmsley and Pickering supported by the theatres in York and the Stephen Joseph in Scarborough bring an added dimension.
The list could go on and on-but simply put we sometimes wish we lived elsewhere so we had an excuse to visit this amazing area.
