The Botanics Park just around the corner from Sunnybank, is where the 1st ever game of rugby was played in NZ. (1870) Enjoy in and around Sunnybank Margaret’s Art & Sculpture. Some will be more than likely ‘work in progress’ while you are staying.
At the top of the stairs, the original Gentleman's smoking room, now with a lofty cathedral ceiling, has been converted to a guest lounge. Relax with a cup of coffee, have a game of chess or choose a book to read and enjoy the views over the garden and out to the sea. Stroll through the beautiful gardens, which display several of Margaret’s Oamaru Stone Sculptures, and relax in one of the Garden ‘Sitting Rooms’ or the Folly at the bottom of the Garden.
Amble along the banks of the Matai River from the bottom of the driveway or climb the Botanical Hill to the geographic Centre of New Zealand. Enjoy the panoramic views of Nelson and Tasman Bay. The more athletic will enjoy the unlimited walking, running and mountain biking, also from the bottom of the drive. Enjoy a game of golf at the Maitai Golf Links, 5 minutes up the river valley from Sunnybank.
