The land on which the Bank of Upper Canada was built, was purchased in 1855 from Almon Harris, John Roche and Sidney Smith. The building was sold in 1868 to The Ontario Bank.
R.A, Corbett bought it from the bank in 1881 as his home and medical practice. He is remembered for his construction of a dam (which bears his name today) in the north end of town, and the installation of a generator thus are bringing electricity to Port Hope.
F. Lingard purchased it in 1920 and began the Port Hope City Dairy. Since the 1940’s, additions were made to the rear (north and east) to accommodate modern dairy facilities. The Downey family purchased it in 1937 and continued to run the dairy until late 1970’s
Dave and Jean Henderson purchased the property in 1986 and turned it into The Carlyle Inn and Restaurant. In 2002 they changed the name to Dr. Corbett’s Inn to reflect a more historic note.
The present proprietors, Richard Pattison and Niels Lund, who have had the opportunity to provide meals for Queen Elizabeth the Second and Bette Midler just to name a few, greet you and hope you will have a memorable time at The Palm Restaurant, whose interior reflects the movie Casablanca. Or have a little repas and drink in The Blue Parrot Lounge (yes there are 2 real parrots in the house). For that very special.
